WHAT IS TAI CHI CHUAN?
Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese system of exercise and self defense which follows the Taoist principles of Yin and Yang.
- The Knee Rule is the first rule: Keep the knees aligned with the feet and hips to avoid injuries.
- The Two Principles are: Stillness overcomes motion. Softness overcomes hardness.
- The Three Treasures are: Mind, Body and Breath, which when worked in conjuction, create a meditative state.
- The Four Directions are: Up (Peng), Down (Lu), Sideways (Gi) and Straight Ahead (An). They form the core of the art and ground the practitioner by emphasizing orientation and spatial awareness.
- The Five Pillars are: The Hand Form, Pushing Hands, Applications, Internal Strength and Weapons.
Pushing Hands is a great introduction to Tai Chi. In this video, you can see that each partner is practicing softness and tries to stay in contact with the other person throughout the whole exercise.
"Think and enquire where does the final purpose lie? It lies in seeking longevity and keeping a youthful appearance."
- Song of the 13 Tactics (4th Tai Chi Classic)

"What has taken China thousands of years to build can not by grasped by theft. We must, instead, earn it to possess it." - Carl Jung
